Military leader looks into sexual misconduct report

Canada’s top military commander has ordered a review of programs to combat sexual violence after a published report alleged assaults in the military have reached epidemic levels.

“Disturbing” is how Gen. Tom Lawson characterized the allegations in the news magazine, Maclean’s. The magazine article contains a series of interviews with alleged victims and information from records of military police investigations that it obtained through the Access to Information law.

Lawson says sexual misconduct is not tolerated within the military, a message he intends to reinforce throughout the chain of command.

“Deeply angered” was the reaction to the article from Defense Minister Rob Nicholson. He said he has ordered Lawson to get to the bottom of the matter.
