Promotional ads for wireless, TV and internet service can mislead or confuse consumers, so the government of the province of Manitoba is proposing new consumer protection rules to enforce clarity.
Service providers often offer special discounts to new customers only to boost their fees later, and then charge cancellation fees for those who want to terminate the service.
In the face of consumer complaints, Manitoba proposed to make providers to make clear the monthly regular cost of their service after the promotional period end. They would also have to disclose any one-time charges for equipment and installation, and there would be limits on cancellation fees and automatic contract renewals.
