Still winter in Newfoundland

A snowstorm over eastern Newfoundland today closed schools, a major highway, and broke a long-held record.

The capital, St. John’s was the scene of several multi-car collisions and warnings were issued on roads throughout the Atlantic province.

In Gander, 21 cm of snow fell in the last 24 hours, beating the previous record for May 6th.  That was set in 1939 when 13 cm of snow fell.

Meanwhile, in northwestern Canada, Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon, was basking in temperatures of 20 degrees celsius yesterday.
