A female worker was killed on Wednesday by a black bear while on the job at Suncor’s oilsands operations in the western province of Alberta. The bear was destroyed by police officers called to the scene.
An official with the government body to assure worker safety said he was not aware of any other cases of bear attacks on people in the remote region, 25 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.
Employees are routinely offered wildlife training by the Suncor compan, including how to alert others of any bear sightings. It’s not clear whether the area was fenced or not. Safety officials and wildlife experts are investigating.
