For the thousands of union delegates at this week’s Canadian Labour Congress convention in Montreal, it was clear they were participants and witnesses of a historic change in Canada’s labour movement. An incumbent president of 15 years had been defeated (by a margin of only 40 votes) by a challenger who wanted change in how Canada’s largest union federation functioned.
But the vast majority of Canadians had little or no knowledge of what happened. And the mainstream Canadian media, if it covered the event, barely went beyond a brief press release from the Congress that Secretary-Treasurer Hassan Yussuff had been elected president.
RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda reports on what happened and what it might mean.
