Beer drinkers will argue endlessly about what is the best beer, or which country makes it.

But, in North America at least they are likely to agree on one thing, the big commercial beer products don’t compare to the taste of the growing variety of smaller craft brewery offerings.

This weekend a panel of experts has decided the best craft beers in Canada for this year.  The 12th annual Canadian Brewing Awards were presented during the Canadian Craft Brewers Conference and featured some 916 entries from over 130 Canadian breweries.

The 2014 judging was held this weekend in Fredericton, New Brunswick on Canada’s east coast, a beer from the west coast took the top prize.

Winning not only the best stout award but also the overall best beer award was “Sasquatch Stout” by the Old Yale Brewing company which was only founded in 2000 in Chilliwack, British Columbia.

Old Yale operations manager told the Province newspaper, ““You would expect a hoppy or double-hopped IPA (to win). For a stout to win, it really goes to show you how great a beer it is.”

The award, presented during the annual Canadian Craft Brewers Conference, recognizes the highest-scoring single entry beer in all 38 categories.

In 2013, the overall winning beer was also from British Columbia, called “Old Jalopy Pale Ale” from the Powell Street Craft Brewery.
