Televised leaders’ debate before election in province of Ontario, no clear winner

With only nine days to go to election day in Canada’s most populous province of Ontario, the leaders of the province’s main political parties faced off in a live televised debate Tuesday night (June 3).

Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne had called the election at the beginning of May after the social democratic NDP leader Andrea Horvath said she could no longer support the Wynne’s minority government.

Toronto Star columnist Chantal Hébert doubted the debate would motivate voters. She also noted that “Watching Tuesday’s leaders’ debate from outside the Ontario election bubble, one could not help but be struck by the insular turn of the conversation among the leaders of Canada’s largest province.”

CBC Ontario Provincial Affairs journalist Robert Fisher suggested that Tim Hudak seemed the most comfortable in the debate, but as Chantal Hébert points out, it’s not clear this will translate into votes.

Election Day is June 12.
