Zoo welcomes baby giraffe

Visitors witnessed the birth of a female giraffe at a zoo in the province of Quebec on Sunday. It’s the first time a giraffe has been born at Parc Safari in 23 years.

“It’s been going very well,” said Francis Lavigne, assistant director of zoology at the park adding the baby was nursing often. The two are being watched 24 hours a day to make sure that continues.

Park staff had been unable to approach first-time mother Bonnie during her pregnancy because she was skittish, and they were relieved when the baby was born without incident.

The park is asking people to pose name suggestions on its Facebook page. See video.
