Police warn against deadly party drug

After announcing two fatalities, Toronto police are warning anyone who has drugs purchased at a weekend music festival to not consume them. A man and woman died at the Veld Music Festival at a park in north end Toronto and 13 others were taken to hospital last weekend.

‘People are dying’

“People are dying because they ingested this drug,” said Deputy Police Chief Mark Saunders. “We want to find that drug. We want to find out exactly what it is.”

People who have one sample of the drug may turn it in to police without fear of arrest. Those who have a quantity are urged to contact a lawyer and make arrangements to turn it in. Police also offered advice they hope will prevent any more deaths.

“If anyone you know was at that festival and you have concerns for their behaviour or how they are acting right now, or if they are in any kind of distress, it is important that they go to the hospital immediately and seek medical attention,” Saunders said.

Sometimes young people attending concerts in Canada will purchase and consume illegal drugs without knowing exactly what they are. Drugs like ecstasy, GHB, or MDMA are common and were named as ones that may have been involved in this case.
