Most Canadian children finish their summer vacation and go back to school right after the Labour Day holiday which is the first Monday in September. While most are back in class today, children in the western province of British Columbia are not because the teachers are on strike.
In most families, both parents work, so they have been scrambling to find alternative child care arrangements. There have been testimonials all weekend from parents who say they will have to use vacation days or lose their jobs to stay home with their children.
Even though pressure has mounted steadily since the strike began in June, there is no sign of an end to the labour dispute. Contract talks broke down on the weekend and a mediator left the talks saying the government and teachers’ union were too far apart to make any progress.
