Google faces tough questioning by Canada’s broadcast regulator CRTC

A Google representative found himself under intense questioning by Canada’s broadcast regulatory body the CRTC at hearings in Ottawa on Monday (September 8). The CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) is looking at the future of television and how Canadians view and pay for it.

For the next two weeks the commission will be hearing not only from television and cable industry representatives, but also representatives from online companies that are increasingly competing with them, such as Google and Netflix.

During the presentation Jason Kee, Google’s Public Policy and Government Relations Counsel, was questioned about Canadian content on YouTube and asked for data, he responded he would have to check with Google before releasing specific data.

CRTC Chairman Jean=Pierre Blais reacted at one point “You’re very much the antithesis of your open platform this morning.”

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda has a report.
