A former sex worker was thrown out of a Senate hearing on a proposed prostitution law, and threatened to make public a list of politicians who pay for sex.
Terri-Jean Bedford was testifying at a committee considering a new law on prostitution, drawn up after a previous law was stuck down in court. Bedford was a main applicant in that legal battle and wanted to tell the committee how much the fight cost.
Legal battle cost $500,000
She had been combative during the committee hearing urging senators to “be quiet” and tapping a riding crop against her palm. The committee chairman told her she had run out of the allotted time to answer a question, but Bedford insisted she be given extra time to find the figure.
When the chairman insisted she stop, she blurted out the legal battle had cost half-a-million dollars. The chairman adjourned the hearing.
‘I have …proof on politicians’
Bedford was adamantly opposed to the new law and, earlier, had said that if it were passed she would “make you guys forget Mike Duffy.” That was a reference to a suspended senator whose expense scandal dominated headlines last year. She added, “I have more information and more proof on politicians in this country than you can shake a stick at. I promise.”
The new law would try to curb prostitution by prosecuting the buyers of sex. Some provisions could also see charges laid against sex workers.
