Florida has long been known as a place where senior citizens move to spend their retirement.
The percentage of citizens over age 65 has long been the highest in all North America.
Now it seems two Canadian provinces are close behind.
In Florida some 18.7 percent of the population is aged 65 or older. But Statistics Canada’s latest numbers put Canada’s eastern maritime provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia close behind and in atie at 18.3 percent.
Two other eastern provinces, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland-Labrador are not far behind with the percentage of seniors at 17.9 percent and 17.7 percent respectively
The numbers show the percentage of seniors in the population age has grown steadily in the past 30 years. Back in 1984 seniors represented only 10 percent of the population, whereas on July 1, this year, seniors made up 15.7 percent.
Statistics Canada says the age level is increasing due to lower fertility rates, and longer life expectancy.
