Canada’s PM Harper clarifies country’s military role in Middle East

Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Canada will not “stand on the sidelines” while militants in the Middle East threaten to slaughter thousands of innocent people.

“We do not stand on the sidelines and watch. We do our part,” the Prime Minister made the comments following a meeting with European Union leaders on Parliament Hill on Friday (September 26).

His comments come after a statement he made Wednesday during a question and answer session in New York City in which he suggested the United States had approached Canada for further military help.

A story in the Toronto Star newspaper the next day said Pentagon officials “confirmed to the Star Thursday the Canadians were willing partners who approached them.”
