Sun Media Corp. has apologized for a rant against Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau by on-air personality Ezra Levant. Mr. Levant himself did not mention the subject on his program on Monday evening.
Levant had maligned Trudeau for appearing in a photo kissing a bride. He also slurred Trudeau’s mother and late father, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, referring to their sex lives.
Trudeau objected and said he would not speak to Sun Media reporters until there was an appropriate response from the media chain.
Trudeau accepts apology
Sun Media finally apologized on air and in a statement posted on its website. “It is the view of Sun News that this segment was in poor taste and should not have been aired. We understand why many viewers found both the content and language of this segment to be offensive,” said the post. “We apologize to Mr. Trudeau, his family and to our viewers.”
A spokeswoman for Trudeau said in an e-mail statement, “We accept Sun News’ apology. We look forward to Sun News journalists resuming participation in Mr. Trudeau’s press conferences.”
A video of the rant was still on Levant’s blog as of late Monday afternoon and Levant did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
