Pascal Goyer was arrested in Montreal in 2012, one of a half dozen people involved in a scheme to dupe grandparents out of money, by convincing them their grandchildren were in trouble.
The victims were phoned, and with panic and urgency, instructed to send money to provide bail, or help in the case of a car accident. Grandparents in six cities wired the scammers amounts ranging from US$1,000 to $3,000.
Most of the grandparents contacted were in southern California. Four co-defendants are still in Canada as the FBI continues the process of extradition.
Goyer was found guilty of wire fraud and sentenced in Los Angeles to five years in a federal prison.
