Although it’s a pain to shovel, many Canadians would prefer some snow rather than rain or freezing rain for Christmas. Ice buildup on branches can bring down electrical lines and cause power failures.

Hopes for a white Christmas fade in eastern Canada

Traditionally, there is an expectation that a beautiful blanket of white snow covers the Canadian landscape for Christmas, but that is not likely this year in the eastern part of the country.

There is a low-pressure system building that will strengthen over the Great Lakes in the heart of the continent bringing mild, humid air to the east.

Montreal is already under a freezing rain warning. Residents there have bad memories of the ice storm of 1998 in which layers of ice accumulated on power lines shutting electricity to much of the city and the surrounding region, leaving millions in the cold and the dark.

This year, Christmas is more likely to be wet than white in the provinces of Ontario, Quebec and those further east with temperatures ranging from 0 to 10 degrees Celsius. Bah humbug!
