It was a hectic Friday night for police and hospital staff in the western Canadian city of Saskatoon Saskatchewan.
Some 10 people were rushed to hospital with serious health issues which resembled a drug overdose.
Police say it appears the victims bought either cocaine or extasy but which had been cut with an as yet unknown chemical which caused the severe reaction.
Police say they are not sure what the chemical is, but they consider it life-threatening.
To warn the public about the street drugs, police began using facebook and twitter to spread the word. They say it seems to have worked either that or they say there is a chance only a small amount of the street drugs were available. In either case, no new problems were reported on the weekend.
Saskatoon police are continuing their investigation and as yet have none of the drug to analyze. They are asking those who may know something to come forward through the anonymous tip line, CrimeStoppers.
Earlier in September two men in the city died after taking what they thought was OxyContin, but instead turned out to be the powerful opiate, fentanyl.
Police point out that any time you buy street drugs, you are taking a risk as to what you are actually getting.
