Easing restrictions for spouses awaiting residency

For a one-year trial period, the Canadian government will start issuing work permits to help the spouses of citizen already living in Canada, but waiting for permanent residency.

Thousands of Canadians families live in limbo with spouses unable to work and without health coverage because it takes so long to process their sponsorship applications, reports the public broadcaster CBC.

Under a one-year pilot program, they will be able to get work permits much sooner while the government processes their applications.
