To the surprise of no one, the Olympic men’s hockey team has been voted the Canadian Press 2014 team of the year by sports editors and broadcasters across the country.
It was a runaway choice. The men’s team received 36 votes, well ahead of 10 for the women’s bobsled team of Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse. The women’s Olympic hockey team received 10 votes.
All three teams won gold medals at the Sochi Olympics.
The men’s team rolled through the Olympic tournament, allowing just three goals in six games–the fewest allowed by a gold medalist since 1928 when Canada completely shut out the opposition in a three-game tournament.
With the gold medal, Canada became the first men’s team to successfully defend an Olympic title since the Soviet Union in 1988. Team Canada is now undefeated over the past two Olympics.
