Homelessness still plagues Canadian society

Let’s face it. The holiday season is exhausting. Presents to buy, parties to attend, family to deal with, plans to make.

How about a bit of perspective.

On any given night across Canada, there are at least 35,000 persons who face a whole slew of way bigger problems. They are homeless in Canada.

Thousands of Canadians battle the effects of poverty every day. We see a man holding a sign on a cardbord carton. The sign reads:

In Montreal, many of those homeless find their way to a shelter called Old Brewery Mission.

To mark its 125 anniversary, the OBM commissioned veteran Montreal journalist Alan Hustak to write a book to mark the occasion.

The result is a coffee table book filled with poignant photographs and eloquent text entitled “From Soup to Self sufficiency.”

Hustak is an old-fashioned, hard-bitten journalist and author. When he joined RCI by phone, I was seeking some perspective about something that he had only encountered before–like most of us–in a somewhat superficial manner.

I asked him the biggest lesson he had learned in the course of his research.
