Official Opposition MP raises Question of Privilege over PM’s statements on Canada’s mission in Iraq

After failing on Monday to get an emergency debate on Canada’s military role in Iraq, Official Opposition NDP party Member of Parliament Jack Harris came back Wdnesday (January 28) with a Question of Privilege suggesting Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his defence minister Rob Nicholson had misled parliament and the Canadian people about the mission in Iraq.

The mission was supposed to provide air strikes, and a small group of special forces personnel who would advise and assist the Iraqi army, but not be involved in a combat role.

Three incidents in which Canadian personnel exchanged fire with militants in Iraq, has the opposition questioning if the mandate of the mission has changed.
