Toronto woman faces immigration fraud charges

Police have arrested and charged 46 year-old Imelda Fronda Saluma after several would-be immigrant workers alleged they were defrauded by an employment recruiting agency in Toronto.

GoWest Jobs International took payments from foreign applicants, mainly of Filipino descent, to produce documents, references and employment contracts. But the applicants say they were denied entry to Canada because of false documentation submitted on their behalf. They were also banned from re-applying to work in Canada for two years.

Saluma faces 39 charges including several counts of fraud and obtaining money by false pretense.

Police allege the company took more than $1.5 million in fees from about 500 applicants from six countries. They believe there are more victims and are asking anyone with further information to contact them.
