Phosphine is an insecticide which acts on the nervous system and must be handled with care. When vaporized it is heavier than air so it stays on the floor where children are likely to play.

Insecticide blamed for baby’s death

Police believe that an insecticide poisoned a mother and five children, causing the death of the youngest. It’s believed family members visited their native Pakistan and brought back phosphine tablets to their home in the Fort McMurray in the western province of Alberta. The substance is toxic and its use is strictly controlled in Canada.

A relative said they may have tried to use the insecticide to combat bed bugs. Pellets were said to have been placed in some corners of the home. When children began vomiting their mother took them to the hospital.

An eight-month-old baby died and four other children are still in hospital in critical condition. The mother is there under observation.
