Snowshoe art beautifies western Canada

While some Canadians like to walk over snow using special snowshoes, few have the artistry of Simon Beck. In February, the world-renowned snow artist made a first trip to Canada to make designs in fields of fresh snow in Banff National Park in the western province of British Columbia.

Using only a compass, a map drawing and a pair of snowshoes Beck laid down the image of a howling wolf at the Lake Louise Ski Resort, a maple leaf at Sunshine Village and a snowflake at Peyto Lake. The snowflake was his largest snow drawing to date measuring 450 meters. It took over six hours to set down.

The works were made between February 21 and 27 and are easily obliterated by snowfall, wind or the coming warm temperatures of spring. However their creation was captured in a mesmerizing, time lapse video.
