City investigates why huge steel girders buckled

Engineers are mystified as to why four massive girders buckled while construction crews were working on a bridge in the western city of Edmonton. Crews worked all weekend on the $32-million bridge replacement project. Shortly after 2a.m. Monday something went wrong and the 40-ton girders just bent out of shape.

City officials were relieved this occurred before the work was complete and the bridge opened to traffic. The road under the span normally accommodates some 39,000 vehicles each workday. Traffic will be re-routed for as long as it takes to investigate why this happened and to make the necessary repairs.
