Canada will extend its military mission in Iraq against ISIL and it will expand its efforts to Syria, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced in the House of Commons on Tuesday morning (March 24).
Since the autumn Canada has participated in air strikes in support of the Iraqi army, and its special forces personnel has been training Iraqi army personnel.
The government is proposing to extend the mission for one year. Both the Official Opposition NDP party and the opposition Liberals say they will oppose the move.
