Legality questioned: Canada’s decision to expand military mission to Syria

The legal basis on which the Canadian government is justifying the expansion of its military mission in Iraq against ISIS to Syria is being questioned by opposition parties and others.

On Tuesday (March 24) Prime Minister Stephen Harper stood up in the House of Commons to announce the government’s intentions to expand air strikes against ISIL from Iraq to include Syria, but immediately he was questioned by the leaders of the Official Opposition NDP and Liberal opposition parties.

Wednesday, both the Foreign Affairs Minister Rob Nicholson and Defence Minister Jason Kenney held press conferences in which they defended the government decision.
