Executive ousted after interfering with news

Media conglomerate Bell Media announced that president Kevin Crull is leaving the company and linked the departure to the importance of the independence of its news operations.

Last month, the government regulator, the CRTC made a decision affecting Bell cable TV services that so angered Crull, he ordered the news director of Bell’s television division, CTV, to not run any interviews with the chair of the CRTC. Canadians expect independence in journalism, so the interference made headline news and earned public criticism from the chair of the CRTC.

‘Independence of…news operations is of paramount importance’

Although Crull later apologized, it seems that was not enough. In its news release, Bell thanked Crull for his contributions, but left little doubt about its decision to let him go.

“The independence of Bell Media’s news operations is of paramount importance to our company and to all Canadians,” BCE president George Cope said in a news release. “There can be no doubt that Bell will always uphold the journalistic standards that have made CTV the most trusted brand in Canadian news.”
