Rare turtle stalls massive wind farm

Plans for a 324-hectare wind farm in the province of Ontario are on hold after a court ruled the project could wipe out the threatened Blanding’s turtle population, reports the Globe and Mail newspaper. Ontario has become a leader in developing wind energy in part, because it closed down all of its coal-fired electricity generating plants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It’s not the wind turbines that are a danger to the turtles, but the roads that would be built to service the site. The decision means the case will be returned to an environmental tribunal to see whether some kind of mitigation could be devised to avert the potential threat to the turtles.

Blanding’s turtles are endangered right around the world.
