Canadians will be able to buy the innovative home battery developed by Tesla Motors, reports the Globe and Mail. The new product called “Powerwall” was unveiled in California on Thursday, April 30. A former executive of a large hardware company intends to import the batteries into Canada.
The rechargeable lithium ion battery is designed to store energy collected by solar panels. That energy could be accessed at times of the day when energy is more expensive or during power failures.
Keep me warm in winter
The latter could be very popular for Canadians whose homes may be heated by electricity in winter. Even when homes are heated by gas or oil, they often need electricity to power on.
Those in eastern Canada who lived through the ice storm in the winter of 1998 may be particularly interested in the battery. Many had no electricity for up to ten days as electrical transmission towers collapsed under the weight of accumulated ice. Many fled their homes as temperatures hovered around the freezing mark.
Although the battery is priced at $3,000 in the U.S., that does not include installation or energy converter.
