Burma, also known as Myanmar, will get $580,000 from Canada to fight religious persecution. The predominantly Buddhist country has faced widespread criticism for the mistreatment of Rohingya Muslims. Human Rights Watch says discriminatory policies will force 130,000 of them into closed camps. Other have fled the country.
Canada’s ambassador for religious freedom, Andrew Bennett said the grant will fund two projects. In a joint statement with his U.S. counterpart, Bennet said religious freedom must improve to advance Myanmar’s security, stability and democracy.
The announcement comes at a time when Canada tries to re-engage with Myanmar as it evolves away from totalitarian rule.
