‘Cellphone Freedom Day’ in Canada today

New CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) regulations go into effect today allowing Canadians in three-year cell phone contracts to walk away, without paying the former expensive cancellation fee.

“Cellphone Freedom Day” is what advocates are calling this occasion with anywhere from 2 to 4 million Canadians affected. It applies to all those who signed a contract as of June 3rd, 2013. Most Canadians are customers of the three main providers, Rogers, Bell and Telus.

Canadians spend C$20 billion annually on wireless services and pay some of the highest fees in the world.

This new found freedom, however, may come at a cost, as the cell phone companies are now raising prices to recoup the cost of the phone in just two years.  But advocates say the companies. knowing there will be a lot of people shopping around now for better deals, are open to negotiate.
