Canadians guilty of being naked in Malaysia freed

Two Canadians who stripped naked on a sacred Malaysian mountain have reportedly been released after pleading guilty to committing obscene acts in a public place. The two were among ten westerners who stripped and were then blamed for an earthquake that killed 18 climbers on Mount Kinabalu on May 30th.

Lindsey and Danielle Petersen, a sister and brother in their early 20s, along with a Dutch and a British citizen were each sentenced to three days in prison, which they have already served. They will also have to pay fines the equivalent of about $1,643.

Ignored pleas to not strip

The court was told members of the group had challenged each other to see who could stay naked the longest in the cold, according to Malay Mail online news. They ignored a plea that they not strip from their mountain guide.

Their lawyer said the four were young people whose generation was accorded more freedom and liberties. He added that they had suffered enough trauma and that international news coverage will deter others from doing the same thing.
