A man in the custody of Canadian immigration authorities has died from a lack of effective medical care, says End Immigration Detention Network. The advocacy group says the man did not get the care needed for a diabetic condition and he died in hospital.
Investigation underway
An investigation is being undertaken by the Special Investigations Unit of the province of Ontario. That unit examines reports of death, serious injury of sexual assault involving police. The Canada Border Services Agency would provide no other information beyond confirming the investigation and the fact that the coroner’s offices had been notified.
Other deaths have occurred
Coroner’s juries have criticized the border agency’s handling of detainees medical needs in the past, particularly the transmission of proper health records to medical authorities.
This was the 12th reported death in detention and the second this year, said the End Immigration Detention Network. It asked for an end to immigration detention and for Ontario to sever its ties with CBSA.
The Canadian Red Cross has complained of a lack of access to immigration detainees held in Ontario jails. Detainees are sent to jails when there is no room left in immigration detention centres.
