Vehicles degrading protected eastern dunes

Canada’s eastern province of Prince Edward Island is surrounded by sensitive dunes and beaches, some of which are being degraded by off-road vehicles. The ecosystems including plants and animals are highly vulnerable, says Island Nature Trust spokesperson Shannon Mader.

In most such areas, vehicles are prohibited by the province’s Environmental Protection Act.  But some people nonetheless persist in taking rides in them. Now that summer is here and traffic is expected to increase, provincial conservation and federal officers will step up patrols of beaches, shorelines and offshore islands to try to stop them.
