FIFA Women’s World Cup – Canadian team exits

Canada’s FIFA Women’s World Cup team went down 2 – 1 to England, on Saturday in Vancouver.  Before a record-breaking crowd of more than 54,000 fans at B. C. Place, it ended in tears for Team Canada.

Captain Christine Sinclair scored her 155th international goal, the only goal late in the first, after England had scored early in the 11th and 14th minutes.

About the heartbreak defeat, coach John Herdman told reporters. “We have no excuse. We came here to win a World Cup … We wanted to make our country proud and I think we did that,” Herdman said.

“Stick with us. We’ll be back and we’ll be fighting strong.”

England goes on now to play defending champion Japan in Wednesday’s semifinal in Edmonton.

On Tuesday No. 1 Germany will play the second-ranked Americans in Montreal.
