National park officials are so tired of people feeding wild animals that they are asking the public to report any incidents they may see. The problem is especially acute in the western Banff, Yoho and Kootenay National Parks.
Many Canadians are on vacation at this time of year. It seems some who visit national parks just can’t resist the temptation to lure animals with food even though the practice is illegal.
Video shows illegal bear feeding
A video of someone in a car tossing food out to a bear was released by Parks Canada along with the request that anyone seeing such a thing record the license plate number or any other information that might help wardens track down offenders. They are asked to report the information by calling 1-888-WARDENS.
Feeding wild animals is dangerous for the people doing it, but also for the animals which may become attracted to roadways where they may be injured or killed.
The case which was videotaped occurred last year on the Icefields Parkway, a scenic highway which traverses western Canada’s Rocky Mountains. The offender was caught and fined $1,000.
