Canada’s environmentalists watched carefully as U.S. President Obama declared an aggressive strategy to reduce carbon emissions from coal-fired gas plants.
They are doubtful Obama’s stand will sway Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper who has steadfastly refused to meet commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and has already said he will not match GHG reduction targets with those of the U.S. Canada is currently in an election campaign and control of government could change on October 19th.
On the plus side for those concerned about climate change, the provincial government of Ontario has already eliminated coal-fired electricity plants, the province of British Columbia instituted a carbon tax, and the province of Quebec has set up a cap and trade system.
