Every month should be September, It’s filled with optimism, hope and an always welcome sense of renewal.

For Canadians, it’s also pretty much our last chance to amble, to not have to scurry between the raindrops and snow flakes that are bound to come.
Songs, of course, have been written about September, but unless we are teachers or students, it pretty much passes like too many other months.
September in Montreal is magical. This year its been absolutely gorgeous.
The tint of colour gathering in the trees can’t wash away of the joys of the summer. The air remains fresh with just a touch of breeze.
Fall (a very short-lived season in Canada) and winter (always a challenge) remain in the distance.
What most makes September magical are the students, who are up and about once again.
We pass a school yard and soak in the din of recess noise. Is there a better sound than kids at play?

The university students flood our downtown streets, making their way to class, filled the boundless energy of youth. For most of them, this is the real start of the year.
They are intoxicating.
The other day, forced to head to a doctor’s appointment, I walked among them on Ste-Catherine Street. What a treat. Suddenly, I was young again, remembering to soak in all the wonders of life.
The trick I reminded myself is to remember that life can be be pretty damn good. September does that.
“God’s in His heaven- All’s right with the world!” wrote Robert Browning all those years ago.
He wrote of a spring morning.
It could just as well have been a September afternoon.
A reminder to one and all: stay alert to the September joys that abound.
They are wonderful!
