Liberals pledges may recapture the immigrant vote

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is promising to make it easier for immigrants to sponsor relatives to settle in Canada if his party wins the federal election on October 19th.

The Liberal Party used to be very popular with immigrants until Conservative Immigration Minister Jason Kenney went on a relentless campaign to court their votes. The effort paid off and contributed to the Liberal fall from power in 2006.

The three main political parties are so close in popularity that many suburban ridings with large immigrant populations could play a critcal role in the final outcome.

Four ways to increase family reunification

While the Conservative government in 2011 introduced a two-year freeze on family reunification applications, Trudeau has announced four measure to make them easier.

He promised to immediately double the number of entry applications for parents and grandparents of new immigrants to 10,000. He would also make it easier for immigrants to bring in siblings and new spouses. He promised to restore the maximum age for bringing in children to 22. It had been changed to 19.
