Public broadcaster wins Olympic rights

The public broadcaster will be Canada’s official Olympic broadcaster for the Beijing 2022 Winter Games and the 2024 Summer Games. That makes the English-language CBC and the French-language Radio-Canada the country’s official broadcaster for the next five Olympics.

The network will be working with broadcast partners Bell Media and Rogers Media. Its president Hubert Lacroix said the deal is “fiscally responsible, and perfectly aligned with CBC/Radio-Canada’s current strategic plan.” The could allay fears about the financing, given that the network has suffered a long series of cuts in the funding it receives from the Canadian government.

Big digital initiatives

CBC/Radio-Canada announced it will also provide Canadian sports content to the International Olympic Committee’s new global digital Olympic Channel from 2016 to at least 2023.

The network notes it broke many digital records during the Sochi Olympics, when it app was downloaded more than 2.5 million times. Over the course of those games its Olympic website got more than 256 views and the app garnered more than 380 million views.

The network has been working hard to expand its role on myriad digital platforms.
