The Canadian Screen Award nominations were announced today by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. The event, which took place in Toronto, revealed some of the front runners mirror the American Academy Award nominations. The films, “Room” and “Brooklyn”, both Irish-Canadian co-productions, are nominated for several awards on both sides of the border.
“Room” based on the novel by Irish-Canadian writer, Emma Donoghue, who also wrote the screenplay, was in first place with 11 nominations in the CSA’s, including best actress for Brie Larson, best actor for the young Jacob Tremblay, best supporting actress for Joan Allen as well as best director for Dublin-based.Lenny Abrahamson, as well as best adapted screenplay and best picture. It is the bleak story of a mother and her 5 year-old son, held captive by her kidnapper.
“Room” was the winner of the 2015 TIFF People’s Choice Award.
“Brooklyn” a story of immigration, garnered three CSA nominations including best picture and best cinematography. Both movies were shot in Canada, in Toronto and Montreal respectively.
“Hyena Road” the Afghanistan-based drama by Paul Gross, received eight nominations. “My Internship in Canada“, a political comedy, by Philippe Falardeau, got four nominations. And Deepa Mehta‘s “Beeba Boys” received three nominations.
In the TV nominations, the father and son duo in the sit-com knowns as Schitt’s Creek, are both nominated, in the same category! Eugene Levy and son Dan Levy are vying for ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Comedic Role’. The series, also starring Catherine O’Hara and Anne Murphy, leads the TV category with 14 nominations.
Orphan Black, was next with 13 nominations. The critically acclaimed sci-fi series, starring Tatiana Maslany, has been a consistent favourite and an international hit.
The Montreal-based police drama, 19-2, received 12 nominations and the school-set comedy Mr. D also got 12 nominations.
The TV miniseries, based on Lawrence Hill’s, The Book of Negroes, earned 11 nominations in the television category and one in the digital realm.
The show will air live on CBC, hosted by Norm Macdonald and include a Lifetime Achievement Award for Martin Short.
