Opposition builds to ex-minister’s university hire

A student survey shows 70 per cent of respondents are opposed to the appointment of former government cabinet minister James Moore as the new chancellor of the University of Northern B.C., reports CKPG TV.

Faculty unhappy too

The university’s board of governors recently reaffirmed its desire to appoint Moore in spite of criticism from the university’s faculty association.

Students want more consultation

The poll results will be presented to the board on January 29th by the president of the Northern Undergraduate Student Society in a bid to win more consultation before the formal selection process begins.

Moore was an influential member of the Conservative government of Canada that was voted out of office in October 2015. Critics say that administration muzzled scientists and stifled academic freedom.
