Edward Burtynsky a GG Award winner in Visual and Media Arts

Edward Burtynsky is being honoured for his photography and film work over the years, as one of the recipients of a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts this year.

He joins Wanda Koop, a painter and video artist, and Mark Lewis, a film installation artist, based in London now.

“These artists have achieved an exceptional level of mastery of their art forms, to the point where they influence the way we Canadians understand our world and its challenges,” Canada Council CEO Simon Brault said in a statement.

The Canada Council administers the $25,000 (Cdn) career achievement honour. The other honourees this year, are filmmaker Philip Hoffman, visual artist Suzy Lake, visual artist William Vazan, textile artist Jane Kidd, winner of the Saidye Bronfman Award for fine craft, and curator Marnie Fleming, winner of the outstanding contribution award.

Along with the money, each recipient recieves a medallion and will have their work featured in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada, in Ottawa.

The 2016 winners will be honoured at a ceremony at Rideau Hall on March 23 with Governor General David Johnston
