Easter celebration in Halifax

Easter Sunday provided the opportunity for Heather Colquhoun’s estimated 500 rabbits to get out of the house. She took them all out yesterday for the one-day display, bringing them all in again last night.

“crazy bunny lady of Oakland Road”

Many Canadians get inspired to decorate for Christmas, and over the last 20 years more and more people get into the spirit at Hallowe’en. But when it comes to Easter, most of us leave it to Mother Nature to provide the decoration in the form of buds and blooms, or simply melting snow.

Colquhoun is one of the few people who gets carried away by bunnies. Haligonians were coming from every direction to take in the variety of rabbits, many from places around the world, as the lady of the house handed out chocolate eggs.

In an interview with a CBC reporter, Colquhoun said it began thirty years ago when her children brought home a pet rabbit. Then she acquired a bunny mug, which led to another one.

“I’ve got so many adorable rabbits, I would just like everyone else to enjoy them,” she said. And with a chuckle confided that she realizes she is becoming known as the “crazy bunny lady of Oakland Road.”
