Part of a road collapsed in Canada’s capital at a busy intersection close to Parliament Hill. No injuries were reported but a van tumbled into the hole as it rapidly filled with water from a broken main. A video was posted on Twitter.

Nearby buildings were evacuated because the smell of gas was reported. Water and gas mains were shut off.
Expect traffic jams
The collapse occurred close to construction for a light rail transit station. The cause is under investigation, but Ottawa is known to have some pockets of highly unstable ground across the city.
It will take some time for the road to be repaired and that will cause traffic headaches in the heart of downtown.
