A new survey suggests that retired Canadians are among the happiest in the world--ranking second only to retirees in Mexico. We see four elderly ladies sitting at the four sides of a card table. It appears to be an old-age home as they is a wide window behind them with a tiny Christmas tree on a shelf. The ladies are dressed warmly in sweaters as the one in the centre sets down a trump.

Poll reveals mixed signals on retirement

Credit Canadians for faith in the future, the belief that everything is going to work out fine when they hit retirement age.

We’ll see about that, given the state of world politics and global economics.

Still, a recent poll by HSBC that studied the issue in 17 countries around the world suggests a couple of things.

1.Nearly half (48 per cent) of working-age Canadians are NOT saving for retirement. (Oops?)

2. Canadian retirees are among the “happiest,” in the world with 72 per cent reporting they feel happy in retirement. That’s second only to retirees in Mexico at 80 per cent. (Really?)

Go figure.

What happens to old people is a growing issue in Canada and the federal government and all the provinces, except Quebec (which has its own plan), recently reached an agreement in principle to help strengthen the Canada Pension Plan.

When finalized, the agreement would see CPP premium increases for workers and employers and a resulting increase in payments to retirees.

As for the report’s finding that Canadian retirees are the second “happiest” in the world?

Just one man’s opinion, but maybe it has something to do with the weather.

How great it is it to not have to get up at the crack of dawn to shovel out your car to get to work on a winter’s morning?

“Happiness?”

Nah.

“Bliss!”
