Niagara Falls to get new lights

One of Canada’s premier tourist attractions, Niagara Falls is getting a new four-million-dollar lighting system. Spectacular by day, the three sets of falls are lit at night by spotlights beaming from the Canadian side.

Officials say energy-efficient LED lights will deliver brighter and deeper colour than did the halogen lights that have been in place for the last 20 years.

The falls were first lit in 1860 with lights used to signal emergencies at sea. Electrical lighting was installed in 1879.

Canada’s falls are shaped in a large horseshoe and are 54 metres high. They carry nine times more water than do the falls on the U.S. side. Figures from 2014 indicate 12 million people visit the falls every year.
