Coming--likely Monday night--to a road like this: winter chaos. We are looking at a virtual white-out. We see two cars through the white snow. They are travelling single file on a road surrounded by snow at its edge. It is evening so the cars' lights contribute to an eerie atmosphere.

Snow arriving just a tad late for Christmas

It’s finally beginning to look a lot like Christmas in eastern Canada.

As Maritimers began digging out Monday from a major Sunday snowstorm that caused traffic problems and flight delays and cancellations, forecasters are predicting the first major winter storm of the season in southern Ontario and Quebec.

Environment Canada says a weather system originating in Texas will bring at least 10 centimetres of snow, mixed at times with ice pellets, on Monday evening. Then, the really bad news: the snow will change to rain before morning.

While western Canada has suffered no shortage of snow this year, most of eastern Canada had a green and brown Christmas, though high winds took out power lines affecting about 220,000 Ontario and Quebec residents on Christmas Eve.

A bit of snow finally arrived in the two provinces on Sunday, setting the stage for Monday night.

Meanwhile, last year’s brutal winter in the Maritimes has prompted a New Brunswick man to launch a snow-remover service that he hopes to have up and running in the next few weeks.

Sean Griffith says his service, “Plow Me Out,” will be similar to the ride-hailing app Uber.

Shovelling snow is considered one of the most dangerous activities a Canadian can undertake because of the risk of a stroke and or heart attack.
